B-52s pound front line near Kabul: ; Taliban field headquarters blasted repeatedly

JABAL SARAJ, Afghanistan - B-52 bombers pounded the front linenorth of Kabul in one of the strongest attacks yet, blasting aTaliban field headquarters. Opposition forces said the bombingappeared directed by U.S. forces on the ground.

Strong American attacks were also reported against Talibanpositions defending the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Oneopposition official, Nadeem Ashraf, called the daylong attacks"relentless" despite overcast skies and heavy rains.

Rensselaer The Rensselaer City Democratic Committee has endorsed state Comptroller H. Carl McCall for governor for this September's primary and November's general election.

Party Vice Chair Tom Nardacci announced the move Tuesday and said McCall was there for city Democrats during last year's campaign and helped them raise money by attending a fund-raiser at the Knights of Columbus.

SYDNEY -- Compensating victims of sexual assault by a priest, a Roman Catholic diocese in Newfoundland is expected to sell all of its churches and missions.

The Catholic Diocese of St. George's told the Sydney Morning Herald it would sell about 150 properties to raise $US10.5 million for the victims of Father Kevin Bennett, who was convicted in 1990 of hundreds of sexual assaults over three decades as a priest on the west coast of the island, according to the paper.

A Capital District man was among the protesters who traveled to an atomic test site near here to protest the explosion of a U.S. nuclear bomb Thursday.

David Burtis of Bethlehem, a statistician for the state, said the test bomb was only about one seventh as powerful as the one dropped on Hiroshima, Japan during World War II, but its impact on world peace in the long run could be much more devastating.
