-Betfair announces rise in annual profits

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

29 June 2011 - Online betting exchange operator Betfair (LON:BET) on Wednesday posted higher annual profits and revenues but admitted that it could have done better on sales growth, the Financial Times reported.
Chief executive David Yu, who is stepping down in 2012, said that in the eight weeks since the start of the new year, the group's main sports betting business has seen slower trading than last year, when there was a boost from the football World Cup.

However, Yu, also cautioned that margins at the group were running below forecasts because of a margin weakness in the core sports betting business last month. The group's margins rose in the year to the end of April.

Revenues increased by 8% to GBP369m (USD590m/EUR411m), while pre- tax profits grew 50% to GBP26.6m.

There was a 20% rise in the number of bets matched to 916m.

QLD:Qld govt facing questions over IT project

The Queensland opposition says the state government's latest IT bungle has the potential
to be as disastrous as the health payroll debacle.

The Bligh government is facing new questions about its handling of IT projects after
reports some government departments have rejected a new in-house email system that's cost
taxpayers 46 million dollars.

The Courier-Mail says only two-thousand have signed up to use the system, which requires
81-thousand users to break even.

The Liberal National Party's spokeswoman for Information and Communication Technology
ROS BATES says there must be an audit of all IT projects and says the government must
come clean about the cost of this bungle and its budget position before the election,
due in March.

VIC:GST cut to cost Vic health system $700m

VIC:GST cut to cost Vic health system $700m

MELBOURNE, April 1 AAP - About $700 million will be ripped out of Victoria's health
system over the next four years if the flagged cuts to the state's GST revenue go ahead,
the state government says.

The Commonwealth Grants Commission recommended last month the government slash Victoria's
GST funding by $500 million in the 2011/12 financial year.

This equates to $2.5 billion over the next four years, or $88 a year for each Victorian.

The Victorian government is lobbying the commonwealth to delay any decision on the
recommended cut until after a review of how the tax is carved up between the states.

Health Minister David Davis said the slated cut would have a dramatic impact on the
state's health system.

Up to 30 per cent of Victoria's budget is dedicated to health, he said.

"Somewhere between $675 million and north of $700 million is the amount that will be
taken out of health spending," he told reporters on Friday.

NSW:Rein wins medal in father's honour

NSW:Rein wins medal in father's honour

SYDNEY, Dec 10 AAP - Australia's former first lady held back tears as she accepted
the nation's most prestigious human rights medal, and dedicated it to her disabled father
and his "lion's heart".

Therese Rein - a businesswoman, mum of three and wife to former prime minister Kevin
Rudd - was awarded the 2010 Human Rights Medal in Sydney on Friday.

Ms Rein accepted the award at the annual Human Rights Medals and Awards ceremony via video link.

She dedicated it to her father, who as a pilot in WWII was involved in a plane crash
and suffered a spinal injury which left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

"He was a man with a physical disability but a lion's heart," she said in her acceptance speech.

"My dad passed away a number of years ago now. But for me, he is still really with me."

Ms Rein is the founder of Ingeus, which provides back-to-work, health and well-being
services to people who need it, including people with a disability and people with health
conditions.

Ms Rein's son Nicholas, 24, accepted the award on her behalf and branded himself proud
to be a "mummy's boy".

"For me my heart has always been captured by my Mum. Yes, I'm a mummy's boy but I'm
very proud of her for what she's achieved but maybe more importantly for the reasons that
have motivated her," he told the gathering.

"I know she's deeply honoured but I'm also just a little bit proud of her too," he said.

In her speech, Ms Rein also drew attention to new standards for liveable housing which
had been developed by the property industry, which mean housing will be built with people
with disabilities and older people in the community in mind.

"I think that's a major breakthrough," she said.

Jack Manning Bancroft, 25 - CEO of the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME)
- took home the Young People's Human Rights Medal.

"The challenge for everyone here is to start thinking of indigenous Australia and moving
away from seeing it as an obligation to an opportunity," he said.

"If we want to stand on the world's stage we need to see this nation as a rich nation
beyond 200 years of history to one of 60,000 years of history that we can all share in."

The young winner also proudly stated that AIME was now working with 1000 children across
the east coast of Australia and the organisation aimed to have indigenous children finish
school at the same rate as "every Australian kid and this can happen by 2020".

"Our mission is to be working with 6000 kids a year by 2020 and see every one of those
kids finish school at the same rate as every Australian kid," he said.

FED:Climate-proof 'cool refuges' needed

By Cathy Alexander

CANBERRA, Aug 3 AAP - Cities may need "cool refuges" as climate change brings heat
waves and the risk of mass casualties, engineers warn.

They've raised the prospect of vulnerable people - including the elderly and the sick
- heading into air-conditioned shopping malls to survive, possibly at night.

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), a body of
engineers and scientists, released a plan on Tuesday to climate-proof the country's cities.

The report cautions that while 90 per cent of Australians live in urban areas, little
has been done to prepare cities for global warming.

Heat deaths could triple in 40 years "with the potential for catastrophic disasters
in unprecedented heat waves".

The report said hotter weather would make it hard to do physical work and exercise.

Old people, young children, the sick and the disadvantaged were most vulnerable, with
most heat-related deaths occurring at night.

ATSE recommended the establishment of "cool refuges" in shopping malls and other enclosed
public spaces.

Better warning systems were also needed.

The report said Australia's cities, which tend to be low-density, should be made more
compact and more concentrated around transport networks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Older housing might need to be renovated or demolished, and more urban green space would help.

Some neighbourhoods are expected to become "local hotspots" during heatwaves. The presence
of water, green spaces, "street canyons" and impervious surfaces will affect how a suburb
copes.

"As the population of Australia continues to grow, our cities are already stressed
by a number of issues ... it is well recognised that climate change is expected to compound
many of these existing stresses as well as introducing new ones," the report said.

It was launched by Australia's chief scientist Penny Sackett at the World Expo in Shanghai,
China, on Tuesday.

Climate change is an issue in Australia's election campaign, with both major parties
promising to reduce emissions by at least 5 per cent by 2020.

Some experts say neither party has a credible plan to meet that target.

Labor is considering a carbon price and would appoint a "citizens' assembly" to look
into it. The Liberals want to pay to store carbon in soil and trees instead.

Fe:Coalition may be an unlikely champion of paid maternity leave

Fe:Coalition may be an unlikely champion of paid maternity leave

PERTH, Dec 21 AAP - The coalition could lead the way on paid maternity leave and wants
women's input on what would make a good policy, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.

Describing the federal government's plans for an 18-week taxpayer-funded paid parental
leave scheme as "Mickey Mouse", Mr Abbott on Monday admitted the Howard government "could
have done better in this area".

Addressing a group of businesswomen in Perth, he said there was no reason the conservative
parties could not lead the way on the issue of paid maternity leave.

Mr Abbott said he wanted women's feedback to help the coalition go to an election with
"a much more fair dinkum scheme to really help women who want to have careers and families".

"I was part of the government that could have done better in this area," Mr Abbott said.

"The current government, I think, has put a Mickey Mouse scheme on the table.

"As we go forward as a country, surely we can do better in this area than we have in the past.

"There's no reason why the conservative side of politics can't make itself a champion
of an issue like this.

"This should be seen as a conservative issue, not an issue for the other side."

The federal government wants to introduce an 18-week taxpayer-funded paid parental
leave scheme from 2011, set at the minimum wage of $544 a week.

An estimated 150,000 new mums and dads will be eligible.

Speaking to reporters after his brief address, Mr Abbott said the issue had been on
his mind "for some time" but he refused to outline any proposals to be put to the party
room.

"I'm seeking advice and not going to go into detail," he said.

Mr Abbott said the government's scheme was "Mickey Mouse" because some women would
be worse off than they would be under the current system.

NSW: 299 officers and five dogs graduate from Goulburn

NSW: 299 officers and five dogs graduate from Goulburn

By Katelyn John

SYDNEY, Aug 29 AAP - Carts the police dog, stabbed to death while on duty, has been
honoured in a dedication ceremony as more then 300 new recruits - including five canines
- graduated to join the NSW Police Force.

Carts died from stab wounds after cornering a fleeing suspect on NSW's south coast last December.

Named after the late David Carty - a police officer fatally shot on duty - Carts received
a posthumous special bravery award from the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia earlier
this year.

Today, he was remembered in a dedication ceremony at the Dog and Horse Memorial at
the Goulburn Police College attended by NSW Police Minister David Campbell and Police
Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

A commemorative plaque was added to the memorial - which remembers fallen police dogs
and horses - and framed photos of Carts were presented to the officers who investigated
and arrested his killer.

After the ceremony, Mr Scipione welcomed 304 new recruits from the southern NSW college
into the NSW Police Force.

The new probationary constables come from across Australia and beyond - including Egypt,
Vietnam, Fiji, England, Germany and Chile.

The 76 women and 223 men - 16 aged over 41 - were welcomed into the force by Mr Scipione,
who promised them "more than just a career" as they took the oath of office.

"Looking ahead, I see a police force that will benefit from the enthusiasm, skills
and diversity our new recruits bring," he said.

"Each of these new officers has chosen a career in policing that brings with it both
challenges and opportunities, but most of all daily rewards.

"In return for their diligent service, these new officers will have experiences and
challenges that make policing more than just a career."

The new recruits bring the NSW Police Force to almost 15,500 serving members.

Also graduating today were three police dogs and two drug detection dogs - Scottie,
Owen, Taylor, Aster and Cora - joining the force after three months of intensive training.

Four police officers received a Commissioner's Commendation for Courage for their commendable
service in performing their duty.

Inspector Mark Christie, Senior Constable Brett Wright and Probationary Constable Semisi
Falekakala were honoured for their courageous actions at a violent domestic incident in
which a man doused in kerosene set himself alight.

Senior Constable Andrew Mayfield received the commendation for risking his own life
to save a woman who tried to throw herself from a building.

"The police officers recognised here today acted with courage, selflessness and professionalism
in order to protect the community," Mr Scipione said.

"I am honoured to present this award to the officers who put their own personal safety
at risk to help and save others."

After 41 years of service to the NSW Police Force, Superintendent John Sweeney marched
off the parade in Goulburn as the lone retiring officer.

In 2004, Supt Sweeney was awarded the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service
in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Race: They're racing at Nine - except Mel Cup carnival

EDS: Reissuing, to correct literal in sixth par

MELBOURNE, Feb 15 AAP - The Nine Network has announced a multi-million dollar deal
for it to broadcast many of Australia's premier horse racing carnivals - but not the Melbourne
Cup.

The eight-day Melbourne Cup carnival - which also includes Derby Day, Oaks Day and
Stakes Day - will remain with Nine's archrival, the Seven Network.

Seven and the Victorian Racing Club have a long term deal for the high rating event.

Nine chief executive Eddie McGuire today announced that 13 race meetings will be broadcast
live on the network starting with the Blue Diamond Stakes race day at Melbourne's Caulfield
race track next Saturday.

"Horse racing is a sport of many champions and it's great to have it back on Nine,"

Mr McGuire told reporters this morning.

"This is a most significant agreement. Never before has there been this level of coverage
on free-to-air television.

"In spring, we will have the Caulfield Guineas, a magnificent race, and the time-honoured
Caulfield Cup, as well as the weight-for-age championship of Australasia, The Cox Plate,
the race of legends."

Sydney's Golden Slipper is also on the Nine schedule.

Media advertising mogul Harold Mitchell, chairman of TVN, said the deal marked a new
level of exposure for Australian racing at a time when it was attracting unprecedented
global interest.

"This commitment recognises the unique cultural relevance of thoroughbred racing to Australians.

"In Australia, horses can be heroes," Mr Mitchell said.

Tas: Murdered businessman was shot, police say

EDS: Changes keyword from Axeman

HOBART, Aug 29 AAP - Police want to speak to the driver of a silver hatchback seen
talking to a Tasmanian businessman on the day he disappeared and was later found shot
dead in the bush.

Detective Inspector Michael Johnston today confirmed 59-year-old John Lewis Thorn had
died of a gunshot wound, but would not detail the injuries or the type of weapon used.

"We don't have the weapon at this stage but we're continuing to search," he told ABC
radio. "That's all part of the inquiries that we're conducting.

Mr Thorn disappeared last Thursday night after going woodcutting near Kalangadoo, where
he ran the Lake Yalleena holiday cabins.

A three-day search for him ended on Saturday after his body was found about 2km from
his vehicle, parked on a bush property about 30km east of Lake Leake in the state's central
east.

Police today called for a person seen with Mr Thorn on Thursday morning to come forward.

Insp Johnston said police believed the occupant of a silver hatchback seen speaking
with Mr Thorn at the Kalangadoo dumpster could assist with their inquiries.

It also was revealed today that Mr Thorn had been previously convicted of fisheries
and drugs charges.

The former east coast fisherman pleaded guilty in April to taking 70 rock lobsters
near Bicheno without a licence.

He was fined $400 and received a special penalty of $17,500.

He also was convicted earlier this year of possessing, using and cultivating a controlled
product.

Residents of the small town of Kalangadoo were still in shock today as they came to
terms with Mr Thorn's death.

Kalangadoo Store owner Vicki Anderson said the town's 50 residents were "closed down".

"We're just in absolute shock that it could happen to a local," she said.

Ms Anderson described Mr Thorn as a "man who did his own thing" but who "liked to visit
people, drop in for cuppas".

Mr Thorn had moved to Kalangadoo, near Lake Leake, about 10 years ago and had been
semi-retired before his death.

His partner and son are expected to make a statement later today.

sent their Christmas wishes to the Australian people.

Remembering the many disasters of the past 12 months, such as the Indian Ocean tsunami
and the Pakistan earthquake, Mr Howard said 2005 had seen the good heart of Australia
on display.

"(We) have demonstrated that this is a generous, outward looking nation willing to
share the good fortune that life has given us with those who are less fortunate," he said
in his 2005 Christmas message.

The prime minister also urged the community to spare a thought for those on the margins
in Australian society.

"We should remember there are still many within our midst who haven't enjoyed life
to the full," Mr Howard said.

"We must continue to do what we can to help them.

"Christmas is a time for families to get together, to see old friends ... (and in)
enjoying that good fortune we should spare a thought for the lonely in our community,
without family and without friends, for whom Christmas can be a particularly hard time."

Mr Howard sent particular wishes to the Australian men and women serving in the Defence
forces overseas, who were away from their family at this festive time.

As workers anticipate a changing industrial landscape following the passage of new
workplace laws this year, Mr Beazley said the time people had with their families at Christmas
was sacrosanct.

"Australians are the hardest workers in the world and this time with family and friends
is particularly precious," he said in his Christmas message.

"Our tough work ethic throughout the rest of the year results in Australians placing
even greater value on this special time with family and friends.

"Time with family is sacrosanct and must never be undermined."

He urged all Australians to show tolerance and respect to all over the festive season.

"I urge all Australians to mark Christmas by reinforcing these unique Australian values
of tolerance, freedom, generosity and respect, particularly with our young people," Mr
Beazley said.

"The greatest gift that one generation can give to the next is an understanding of
the values that make our society great.

"My message to all Australians this Christmas is: Be proud of the values that make
us uniquely Australian and take the time to pass on those values to your children."

CFE Posts Third-Quarter Operating Loss.

MEXICO CITY, Oct 29, 2001

Mexican state-owned power utility the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced third-quarter net profits of 3.702 billion pesos, and operating losses of 1.117 billion pesos, reported Mexico City daily el Universal. The negative balance was owed to increases in energy prices, while the CFE's rates remained unchanged, reported Mexico City daily el Universal. Fixed net assets represented 88.8 percent of the CFE's total assets. Despite net profits, the company had negative operating profits because of rising energy costs, the company emphasized. The CFE said it would continue to announce its financial results in an effort to increase the organization's transparency.

It's Formula One without the cash, but the Fl project is really starting to buzz.

Richard Noble has assembled a team of engineers to create a new kind of light aircraft, the Farnborough Fl, designed to open up a market for single-engined air taxis across the US and Europe. The project is gathering pace.

Since the Farnborough Air Show, new engineers have joined the team, and funds are coming in from supporters -- many of whom have discovered the project via its website -- at the rate of around [pound]120,000 a month.

At the same time, attention is turning towards the manufacturing requirements of the new aircraft, to meet a global market that could be in the tens of thousands, and talks are planned with two major manufacturers: not of aircraft, but of cars. takes up the story...

'WE HAD A fantastic Farnborough. We talked to everyone and got a terrific amount of interest from the industry. At the same time the funding off the internet really is growing, There are now 111 people who have made unsolicited donations, amounting to a total of [pound]460,000. And we are getting [pound]120,000 of new money every month. Not that this means we are rich. There is no City money in this, and no government money, either. But we now have 45 people on the payroll.

I will have to spend some more time in the US, talking to our suppliers over there about our concept and what we are doing. The idea of a single engined, propeller-driven aircraft is not a big thing in the states. In the US at the moment everyone is very focused on business jets, a market that's growing fast.

People are talking about a new class of small business jet, which is basically two small jet engines with a cabin in the middle, designed for the amateur pilot. But these 'biz.jets' are noisy little screamers, need a longer runway than our plane, and don't climb as fast. That's where the biz-jet concept runs into trouble.

Our propeller-driven aircraft is quieter, which is enormously helpful when you are dealing with local residents who are opposed to the reopening of their local rural airfield because of noise. That's why in the long run, our aircraft, which is as fast as these business jets, will be able to land in a lot of places where they cannot. In the market for air taxis, that is a crucial advantage.

The big engineering issue for us continues to be the design of the air intake, which is likely to cause some changes to the front end of the aircraft, as it passes around the front undercarriage.

As the aircraft is really one big spreadsheet, where every. thing affects everything else, this is likely to be a big job, and could take our air intake designer well into next year. But if we change too far from the standard design, the question is always how much more certification this will entail, even though it may look like a great engineering improvement.

This problem has not taken us by surprise. Our chief engineer Nigel Bamber says he always knew the air intake would be a bit of a drama, but it's only as we move into the more detailed engineering this becomes evident.

The team is growing. Since the Farnborough Air Show, where we got round to talk to as many people as possible, interest in the project has really taken off, and we are getting some extremely talented people involved, including senior guys from A3XX. Many find that their jobs on the overall concept of the aircraft have shifted into detail design, and hence their desire for a new challenge.

Our main vacancies at the moment are for a stress engineer with experience of composite structures, and a systems engineer who knows how to lay out fuel, hydraulics and oxygen systems for an aircraft.

We've also had more suppliers approaching us. The typical deal is that they get involved in some of the design work, and give us some of the first shipments free of charge, in return for getting their kit specified on the plane,

The team here is working hard, with a minimum of around 40 hours a week, and some people putting in 60. But the atmosphere is really buzzing, especially as more and more new people join. It remains a small team, with good feedback and communication. There's no politics, or any of the distractions that face larger organisations, and the management structure is very flat Nigel likens the atmosphere to that of a Formula One team-but without the money.

We are also starting to think about the operating system software. This is the system that will operate the aircraft booking and scheduling over the internet. For a network of air taxis the system will be a lot more complex than typical A to B to A charter flight logistics. This unique system must be developed from scratch, and Unisys is working with us.

It may seem like a long way ahead, but the manufacturing process needs to come into play now, as there could be design changes to be made to simplify that process. The Fl will be a composite structure, so we want to re-appraise the traditional build technique, which remains something of a craft skill.

We need to create a virtual production capability concurrently with the design of the aircraft, and we are going to talk to car manufacturers to see if we can share some of their expertise in this field.

Yes, that's car makers: they are the only ones who know how to do this best. They could also make some money out of it -- at a time when overproduction in the car industry is causing margin decline. It will be interesting to see what they make of it.'

Grand final target.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

A group of Australian Muslims planned to attack a 2005 football final in Melbourne attended by 97,000 fans, Australia's biggest terrorism trial heardA yesterday. But security raids on the homes of some members of the group in July 2005, three months before the Australian Football League (AFL) grand final, forced the group to change its target and begin planning attacks on Melbourne's casino during a Formula One race weekend or another football match, the court heard.

Muslim spiritual leader Abdul Nacer Benbrika and 11 of his followers have pleaded not guilty to charges they planned a bomb attack to force Australia to withdraw its troops from Iraq. Australia has about 550 combat troops in Iraq, which it plans to withdraw by about the middle of this year. Australia also has about 1,000 troops in Afghanistan.

A former associate of the 12 men told the Victorian Supreme Court yesterday that Benbrika had told him the group was targeting the AFL grand final, the biggest football match in Australia each year. "He said the AFL grand final was the original target," Izzydeen Atik told the court. Atik said the AFL attack was cancelled after Australian security agents and police raided the homes of some members. He said the raids had raised security concerns among the group and robbed it of its finances, which were seized by authorities.

He said the group then decided to target Melbourne's Crown Casino during the city's Formula One Grand Prix and an AFL pre-season match. The prosecutor has told the court that Benbrika, who praised Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden as a "great man", told the group that Australia was a land at war and jihad was justified.

The prosecutor said police raids on the men's homes had found literature on how to make bombs and video tapes with messages from bin Laden and showing beheadings.
