NSW: NSW and Turkish students to study Anzac traditions
SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - Schools in NSW and Turkey will be linked under a plan to develop
a better understanding of Anzac traditions, the NSW government said today.
Premier Bob Carr said a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) had been drawn up to bring
teachers and students in the two countries closer together.
The idea had come from Turkish authorities in a bid to encourage the study of the Anzac
tradition, he said.
"It will encourage students to explore what happened at Gallipoli, not just from their
text books but from accounts or sources not normally used by students in Australia," Mr
Carr said in a statement.
"It is a very meaningful way to keep our Anzac traditions alive through the minds of
our youngest generations."
Under the MOU, teachers and education experts in NSW and Turkey will be able to exchange
ideas and resources on the history, culture and language of Turkey.
Possible teacher exchanges will be explored, sister-school arrangements promoted, and
direct electronic links established between the Turkish Education Ministry and the NSW
Education Department.
"This agreement will open up another avenue of study - an important way for our students
to remember and learn about the history of our modern nation," Mr Carr said.
He said the agreement was still at an early stage, but the MOU would be signed by NSW
and Turkish education authorities.
