Vic: Euthanasia campaigner slams export laws

Australia's leading euthanasia campaigner has slammed the country's export laws afterbeing interrogated by customs officials at Melbourne airport this morning.

Dr PHILLIP NITSCHKE was taken in for questioning by customs officials as he attemptedto board a flight to New Zealand.

Dr NITSCHKE, who is visiting New Zealand as part of a speaking tour, says he'd beenexpecting trouble leaving the country after being detained at Sydney's Kingsford SmithAirport in January, over his so-called suicide machine.

Dr NITSCHKE says this morning, he was told he was being examined under the ProhibitedExports Act which prohibits the import or export of devices or information pertainingto assisted suicide.

Dr NITSCHKE says the Prohibited Exports Act is a ludicrous and ill-thought out pieceof legislation.

An Australian Customs Service spokesman says Dr NITSCHKE wasn't detained but simplysubject to routine outgoing passenger processing.
